Very difficult, indeed, Mercurystar pondered a thought. How on earth are you supposed to know how to control your claws if you don't know how many you have? And, then, how earth are you expected to count them? Really, with all the fur in the way. One moment you see a claw, then next you don't. And then there's the problem with missing a claw or counting one twice.
Mercurystar obsessed with the idea a few moments more, then looked up at the sky. Marvelous. A few dark, cold clouds hovered overhead. She sat up and looked at the spot where she had just been lying. It was probably still warm.... She was tempted, and fell for it. She laid back down and picked at the fur between her claws with her teeth.

Zebratongue padded out into the clearing. He had been taking a nice, enjoying catnap. He was about to sit down when-
Koalayawn, who had just woken up from a very deep sleep that she thought she had deserved, burst from the warriors' den. She flew past Zebratongue, almost barreling him over. She had felt their hairs touch, and she knew that she was in trouble. Koalayawn skidded to a stop and faced Zebratongue, but it was too late.
Now he was mad. He felt his advantage over the smaller and younger warrior as he towered over her. He glared at her, but didn't know what to say.
"Uh, Zebratongue!" Koalayawn exclaimed as though she hadn't noticed him. "I'm soo sorry if I disturbed you-"
"Don't bother with apologies. Just make sure you learn to control yourself." Zebratongue couldn't think of a very good scolding, so he settled with what he had. He had been standing after Koalayawn had surprised him, but he sat down now and licked his ruffled chest fur.
"But I'm still very-" Koalayawn stopped herself when Zebratongue gave her another glare. She smiled and sat down. Once again she found her mouth about to form the words of an apology. She decided to change the topic completely. "So... Have you ever had mint before? I'm craving some right now. I know that it's a medicine cat herb that I'm only supposed to take when I'm sick or something, but there's this one kind that has no medicine value, and it's very good. Do you want me to get us some?"
Zebratongue gave a o.O look and meowed,"Yes, I have had mint before." He shrugged. "It doesn't matter. I'd be happy either way... Yes, go and get some." He thought that atleast if she went, she would be gone instead of sitting here talking and she would have gotten him a treat.
"Okay!" Koalayawn mewed happily. She jumped and ran for the camp entrance... She came back with a mouth full of leaves. "Is this enough?" She dropped them at Zebratongue's paws.
He blinked and asked,"Where did you get them?" It was always hard to find herbs and things on such barren territory.
Koalayawn gave a ^^ face and mewed,"It's my secret."

Spiraeapaw yawned absently, watching with irritation as the two warriors in the clearing made a terrible racket. Grumbling, she got to her feet and sauntered over, shooting each of them a glare--Koalayawn in particular. She didn't particularly like the waves of positivity rolling off the other she-cat.
So she settled herself near Mercurystar, choosing a small bird from the freshkill pile and eating close to her leader. She curled her bushy tail over her paws, eyes switching from cat to cat as she ate--slowly.

Zebratongue looked over to Spiraeapaw and narrowed his eyes at her. How dare she give me such a glance! Yeah, she's going to be our next medicine cat, but I've been here ever since her parents were kits!
Koalayawn, now distracted from the mint, tumbled over to Spiraeapaw. "Hi, how are you this morning?! I think it's a great day for hunting and stuff. How is it, being an apprentice? I remember being an apprentice, but then again you're a medicine cat apprentice."

Her muscles tensed as Koalayawn drew near, and she couldn't help her lips curling back in a snarl. This cat was too hyper. Maybe if Spiraeapaw drugged her with an herb of some kind...
NO. No, that would be bad, and her mentor would not approve.
So instead, while the fur on her neck rose with irritation, the medicine cat apprentice growled, "Perhaps, Koalayawn, if you spent a little less time acting like a kit, then you'd understand what it means to be a medicine cat. And stop playing with herbs!" This last part was added in a bit of an outraged yowl, as she had realized why the other cat had smelled minty.

(UUUURRR! I just POSTED here! My dad must have gotten rid of it. >=O )
Zebratongue thought of Koalayawn as annoying, like any cat would, but he always thought of her as a kit of his. Since he had never had any kits of his own, he cared for her. He probably choice her of all cats because she needed "help" with her annoyingness and she was the only one who could put up with his grumpiness. And when a kit of someone's is insulted, the father of it acts. In this case, he was the father.
"Well, Spiraeapaw, might I say that you are in no place to be calling older cats kits when you are still one yourself."

Oakleaf finished washing his paws in the stream that surrounded their island-camp from treating a tick problem in the camp with mouse bile. He spotted Spiraeapaw arguing with Koalayawn and Zebratongue. He shook his head and smiled. Sorta typical of Spiraeapaw. Beneath her bossy attitude lies great potential as a Medicine Cat. He strolled down the slope to the fresh-kill pile where Mercurystar, Spiraeapaw, Koalayawn, and Zebratongue were. "Hm. Good morning everybody. I hope my apprentice isn't too much of a problem.." He meowed, slightly nudging Spiraeapaw with his tail.
